OUR
HISTORY
The Bear-Glasgow Family YMCA began in
March 1996 at a storefront in Peoples Plaza.
Our first programs were Summer Day Camp sessions
for approximately 20 to 30 campers per week
held at Lums Pond State Park. Our second
step was to hire a Childcare Program Director
who started After School Care at Commodore
McDonough School. From there, we have grown
to ten Before & After School care sites
in three school districts (Christina, Appoquinimink
and Colonial).
In
1996, we launched a Teen Leaders program.
Their first community service project,
preparing Thanksgiving Baskets for needy
families, is still going strong and now
serves 25 families. The teens continue
to benefit the community with various other
service projects throughout the year.
Youth
Sports began with outdoor soccer in the
spring of 1997. Our sports have now expanded
to Flag Football, T-Ball, Indoor Soccer,
Basketball, Instructional Basketball and
Cheerleading.
With
our focus on serving this growing community,
we plan to become the "center of town" with
a gym, Fitness/Wellness Center, pools,
child care space, with programs for all
ages including aerobics and sports. We
will maintain our presence in the community
by continuing to use local fields and gyms
to reach the public with our programs even
after our building is up and running.
Our
values-based organization serves members
by offering programs designed to strengthen
the family, help children attain their
full potential and build a strong community. |
