OUR MISSION
The Brandywine YMCA is an association of people of all ages, ethnic groups and religious affiliations that strives to cultivate the human potential, self-esteem, and dignity of all people. Our organization exists to develop and practice the Christian principles of love, caring, inclusiveness, justice and peace...and to enrich the emotional, physical and social life of all individuals, families and our community.
OUR HISTORY
Reaching out to suburban Wilmington families in 1957, the YMCA purchased 24.5 acres on Harvey Road. Two years later a small building and pool opened at the site. The facilities were soon crowded, which led to an interest in expanding facilities. In 1966, the Brandywine YMCA moved to the Talleyville location where it remains today.
By 1977, the Brandywine YMCA was operating at full capacity and plans for expansion began to percolate. New additions to accommodate a growing membership included a gym, track, Fitness/Wellness Center as well as new locker rooms.
The Central and Walnut Street YMCAs joined with Brandywine in creating an outdoor facility and camp on the 90-acre Hanby property. Children from all three branches enjoy day camp activities there during the summer. Members are welcome to use the outdoor facility during the summer in the evenings and on weekends when many families enjoy the outdoor pool and picnicking in a lovely outdoor setting.
Today, the Brandywine YMCA serves over 15,500 members -- kids, adults and seniors in the North Wilmington area. Programs include Aquatics, Fitness/Wellness, Before/After School Child Care, Day Camp, Preschool, Swim Team, Youth Sports and Adult Enrichment Programs. Facilities include a Fitness/Wellness Center, two indoor pools, a full-size gym, an aerobics studio, multi-purpose classrooms, a babysitting facility, and a massage room.
In addition to traditional YMCA activities, the Brandywine YMCA specializes in helping people new to exercising move into a fitness/wellness program that encompasses exercise, stress management, nutrition and FUN.
The Brandywine YMCA is accessible for those with physical disabilities. We offer programs for special populations including personal training for seniors, M.S. land and water fitness programs, aquatic programs for those with arthritis and back pain, as well as instructional programs for kids with special needs. For families, we offer babysitting services and have special events including a Fall Festival, a Holiday Event, Healthy Kids Day in the spring and many more.
