Aquatics - Youth Swim Lessons

During the first week of lessons, participants will be swim tested and placed into one of the levels described below.

Polliwog
This is the beginner level for children age 6 or older who has little or no water skills, or who is uncomfortable getting their face wet. The class introduces basic floating, freestyle, backstroke, and water safety skills. Strong emphasis is placed on proper use of equipment and swimming techniques. If a child was previously a Pike or an Eel and has turned 6, they should enter this class. To advance to the next level, the child should be comfortable in the water swimming at least ½ the length on their front or back.

Guppy
This class is for the youth who can swim ½ the length on their front or back and is comfortable in deep water. Emphasis will be on establishing horizontal position, stroke development, and rotary breathing. If a child was previously a Ray or Starfish and has turned 6, they should enter this class. To advance to the next level, the child should be able to swim one length of the pool completely unassisted with rhythmic/rotary breathing.

Minnow
This level is for the youth who can swim1 length of the pool unassisted with rhythmic/rotary breathing. Strokes are refined with emphasis on horizontal position while performing rotary breathing, back and side
strokes with an introduction to breaststroke. To advance to the next level, the child should be able to swim two lengths of the pool freestyle and backstroke as well as one length breaststroke.

Fish Plus
This level is for the youth who can swim two lengths freestyle and backstroke as well as one length breaststroke. Swimmers will review and practice freestyle and backstroke with refinement of breaststroke, introduction of butterfly kick and treading water for one minute.  Lesson includes work on endurance, stroke refinement and swimming terms such as yardage, sets and drills.
