School of Dance
Ballet Instructor - Benjamin Cannon
Benjamin Sterling Cannon is a Wilmington, Delaware native, and is the grandson of legendary Wilmington jazz vocalist Millie Cannon. Mr. Cannon received his dance training at Wilmington’s premier school of classical ballet, The Academy of the Dance, where he studied as a Helene Antonova scholarship student, under James Jamieson and Victor Wesley. He is a former soloist of The North Carolina Dance Theater, with whom he traveled nationally, dancing roles from the company’s eclectic repertoire and in original works by the late Salvatore Aiello. While the company was on hiatus, Mr. Cannon enjoyed leading choreography workshops and teaching master classes in public schools with the company’s outreach program. Also an accomplished actor, Mr. Cannon has starred in numerous national and international touring, and regional productions of A Chorus Line, Smokey Joe’s Cafe, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, to name a few. He has collaborated as a choreographer with Barbara Siman and Charles Strouse and starred in their work in progress, Stolen in New York. He will premier a new ballet, Moving Through, in fall 2008, created for Philadelphia’s Danse4nia Repertory Ensemble. As a producer, he has created The New Works Series, and is collaborating with The Christina Cultural Arts Center to bring innovative and thought provoking artists to Wilmington. His play, Personal Integrity will also have its premier in late 2008. Mr. Cannon made his Broadway debut in 2004 playing the comically maniacal hyena Banzai in Disney’s long running hit The Lion King. He happily lives and creates in the village of Harlem in New York City.
