Continuous Service to Delaware since 1889
The YMCA of Delaware meets the needs of all people - all ages, all walks of life, all ability levels - throughout the state as it has for more than 113 years.
Through its branches, the YMCA of Delaware provides daycare to children, nurturing programs for everyone - young, old and in between --, participation in healthy activities, training in sports and fitness, resources in prevention and education programs.
In Wilmington, the YMCA started at 1005 Market Street, moving first to 10th and Orange Streets, and then, in 1929 to the location of the Central YMCA at 11th and Washington Streets.
For more than 150 years, the YMCA has powered people of all ages, races, religions and incomes to attain their potential in spirit, mind and body. This power has made the YMCA one of the most successful social institutions ever known.
The YMCA touches nearly everyone in some way. The Y invented basketball and volleyball. YMCAs pioneered camping, public libraries, night schools and teaching English as a second language. The world first indoor pool opened at a Y and led to the first group swimming lessons. YMCAs offered after school programs to children long before anyone coined the term: latch key kids.
A mission-driven organization, the YMCA helps individuals and groups reach their full potential in spirit, mind and body. Throughout the country, people at YMCAs enjoy activities and each other in an environment of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
