The Rich History of the Walnut Street YMCA

Founded in 1939, the Walnut Street YMCA became the hub for African American social life in Wilmington. The programs offered at the YMCA included bowling, basketball leagues for youth and adults, swim lessons, dance lessons, and teen programs. Father and sons dinners and mother and daughter teas highlighted the social seasons. Many fraternities and sororities used our facility for its annual balls and monthly meetings.

Closed in 1996 for renovation, the Walnut Street YMCA reopened to serve the community in 1998, following construction and updating.

Walnut Street YMCA still offers programs like swim lessons, teen programs, and basketball leagues. Today, it also provides programs and services for youth, adults, and families like babysitting, story time gym and personal training.
