The
ESC was created two years ago to bolster the ranks of volunteer
services. Corps members work with volunteer fire companies, the
Fire Marshal’s Office and Emergency Management. ESC members
recruited volunteers for the fire departments, gave 72 fire safety
presentations in schools, and taught first aid to community groups.
This year the ESC participated in 60 community events. These activities
resulted in 86 new volunteer applications. They have also helped
159 people become certified in CPR/First Aid.
ESC was begun as an initiative of New Castle County Office of
Emergency Management and a partnership between the YMCA Resource
Center, AmeriCorps and the NCC Volunteer Firefighter’s Association.
