Worn shoes pave the way
for a brighter Third World

YMCA of Delaware members have been contributing their used shoes for the Shoe Away Poverty program, which provides shoes to Third World countries. To date, more than 1,000 pairs have been contributed. The proceeds raised from donated shoes provide relief around the world and this has helped provide two families in Ghana with sustainable living.
The shoes were shipped overseas, refurbished and sold in Africa, typically for $3-$5 per pair. For every 500 pairs of shoes, one family in Ghana can receive training through KITA (Kumasi Institute of Tropical Agriculture) and the MORE (Modular Organic Regenerative Environment) system, programs that bring more effective irrigation, agriculture, crop and livestock methods to West Africa. The collection is organized by volunteers and driven by word-of-mouth efforts.

So far, the Perpetual Prosperity Pumps Foundation (www.pppafrica.org) has collected more than 10,000 pairs of sneakers from the YMCA of Delaware, Delaware State University and schools, churches and fitness centers.
