Debate
your Issue, Speak your Mind, Create a Law. Make
a Difference!
Through the YMCA Youth in Government (YIG) program,
teens catch the excitement of shaping the future
by learning how government works and what it takes
to make changes
How Youth In Government
works
- Teens from across Delaware meet in their
local YMCA or school delegations from January to
April where they discuss issues, learn about Delaware’s
legislative process, develop public speaking and
debate skills and learn how they can make a difference
in their communities.
- Delegates attend a 1-day Training and Elections
Conference in February
- Delegates run and campaign for office and
serve as members of the Executive branch, House,
Senate, Cabinet, Page and Press Corps.
- Each Spring, the “real government”
moves over and the teen delegates “take over”
the historic chambers of our State Capitol for a
3-day, youth led, Model General Assembly
- The spring weekend includes mixers, Governor's
Banquet, a dance and other fun stuff!
- Additional leadership opportunities include
a national youth governor's conference and a YMCA
Youth Conference on National Affairs (CONA).
