Wilmington, Delaware – The YMCA of Delaware has raised $1,441,316.00 to date to help children and families in need participate in YMCA programs. These dollars fund YMCA financial scholarships through the Open Doors program. Delaware citizens in long term or temporary financial distress can apply for these funds and use them towards branch memberships, summer camp, childcare, preschool and other Y programs. John Pierson, Annual Campaign Director for the YMCA of Delaware said, “The goal this year was $1,355,000.00, so we are close to $100,000.00 over the initial goal. The generosity of our members and volunteers never ceases to amaze me; in fact it inspires me to do more.” “We thank our members, volunteers, staff, our partners and the community for their contributions,” said Deborah Bagatta-Bowles, Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA of Delaware. “These dollars give us the ability to insure everyone in Delaware has access to a safe and welcoming environment with resources and opportunities to reach their full potential. Last year, we provided 2.5 million dollars in financial assistance. In 2013, we served over 100,000 people and had more than 18,500 children in our childcare and camp programs. 800 of those children were served a healthy meal every day to ensure their growth and development. The Water Wise program originally conceived for inner city youth with limited access to swimming pools, expanded to third grade students in some school districts, teaching thousands of children potentially life saving skills.” The YMCA of Delaware launched the Annual Campaign on February 15, 2014 and received financial gifts from 5092 people. “The Y tries to strengthen Delaware by providing access to everyone,” Deborah Bagatta-Bowles said, “and it takes a community that cares to do it. As one of the leading nonprofits for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the YMCA of Delaware depends on financial gifts to do its vital work so that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has an opportunity to receive the support and guidance to learn, grow and thrive. The YMCA of Delaware believes that when people have a place to feel welcome, have someone to encourage them, and opportunities to participate in activities that interest them, they are more likely to identify and achieve their personal goals.
