A Journey Toward Better Health with the YMCA
For Rae Porter, the YMCA of Delaware’s Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) was more than just a class; it was a life-changing experience. Diagnosed as prediabetic, Rae had trouble breathing and needed a cane to get around. She knew it was time to make a change, but like many, she didn’t know where to begin. The YMCA gave her the tools, support, and confidence to take control of her health and start her journey toward a better life.
During the 16-week Diabetes Prevention Program, Rae learned that small, consistent steps can lead to big results. With guidance from her supportive DPP coach, Cindy, and encouragement from her peers, she began incorporating healthier food choices, increasing her activity levels, and building habits that stuck.
“When Rae first entered the program, she didn’t have a lot of mobility,” Cindy said. “She just soaked up the information like a sponge, and more importantly, she applied it. She’s really reduced her weight, and her risk profile has improved. We’re really proud of Rae.”
For Rae, nothing was more motivating than seeing clear results that proved her hard work was making an impact. “I lost 15% of my body weight, which really dropped my A1C. And it’s still dropping,” Rae shared. “The impact has been tremendous on my whole way of life.”
Since completing the program, Rae has lost weight, lowered her blood sugar levels, and feels stronger and more empowered. But perhaps most importantly, she’s found a sustainable path forward—one built on education, community, and lasting change.
“I just really can’t stress enough how valuable and important this really is to the rest of your life.”
