We are pleased to invite you to join us in celebrating Women’s History Month on March 20th at the Brandywine YMCA. This event is open to the community and promises to be a remarkable occasion as we honor the contribution of women to society and commemorate their achievements in various fields.
We are privileged to have U.S. Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester on hand as she’ll be recognized as a YMCA Congressional Champion. Rep. Blunt Rochester has dedicated her career to advocating for equality and promoting the rights of women. Her presence will undoubtedly inspire us all and provide us with valuable insights into the ongoing struggle for gender equality.
We will also have multiple legislators on hand who’ll take part in a “living room style” discussion on being a female leader in Delaware in 2023.
The event will begin at 11 a.m. with music and other activities that showcase the impact of women on society.
At 12 p.m., Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester will be presented with a YMCA Congressional Award and make comments.
We hope that you will join us in this celebration and participate in the exchange of ideas and experiences.

Mary Ann Shadd Cary become a teacher, writer, staunch abolitionist, suffragist, the first black woman to publish a newspaper in North America, the first female admitted to Howard Law School and one of our country’s first female lawyers. On the 200th anniversary of her birth, learn about her amazing life, her Delaware ancestors (dating before the Revolutionary War) and see how Delaware is finally recognizing the importance of this “diamond” of the “Diamond State.”
Lora Englehart has always been interested in history and is fascinated by the wealth of unknown herstory. A simple article about freedom in the July 4, 1996 News Journal launched her on a journey of discovery into the life of Wilmington-born Mary Ann Shadd Cary. She successfully nominated Shadd Cary to the Delaware Women’s Hall of Fame and the National Women’s Hall of Fame. Lora’s biography of Mary Ann Shadd Cary is close to completion.
