The “Sea Gals”: Sussex Family YMCA

Meet the “Sea Gals” — Friendship, Fun, and Pickleball at the Sussex Family Y

What began as a beginner pickleball class at the YMCA turned into a lasting friendship for 14 active women who call themselves the “Sea Gals.”

Hailing from several different states, the group connected instantly—cheering each other on, laughing through mishaps, and sharing life stories. Their name came from a happy moment together, and it stuck, symbolizing the joy and camaraderie they found in one another.

Now, they meet regularly to celebrate birthdays, enjoy games, and support each other through life’s ups and downs. Whether it’s celebrating milestones or helping a friend during a difficult time, these women show how meaningful friendships can grow later in life.

For the Sea Gals, the Y has become more than a place to stay active—it’s where lasting connections are made. “Even meeting one friend can just change your world, and this absolutely changed it for me,” Trisha Saternow said. Carolyn McNeice adds: “Don’t be lonely. If you’re looking to talk to someone about a unique problem, you’re going to find it here.”

From their 60s to 70s, the Sea Gals are living proof that community, laughter, and friendship thrive at every stage of life. Click here to learn more about offerings at the Sussex Family YMCA.
