YMCA Of Delaware Celebrates Black History Month With Community Events Honoring Culture & Legacy

Wilmington, Delaware – The YMCA of Delaware is proud to commemorate Black History Month by hosting a series of community events that celebrate Black culture, history, music, entrepreneurship, and the lasting impact of Black leaders and institutions. Throughout February, YMCA of Delaware locations will welcome community members to participate in meaningful, family-friendly programs designed to educate, inspire, and celebrate.

“As an organization committed to strengthening communities and ensuring everyone feels they belong, honoring Black History Month is an important opportunity for the YMCA of Delaware to celebrate cultural contributions while fostering connection and understanding,” said YMCA of Delaware President and CEO Jarrett Royster. “These events not only recognize the powerful history and achievements of Black leaders, artists, and entrepreneurs, but also create spaces for our community to learn from one another, celebrate diversity, and continue building a more inclusive future together.”

Celebrating the Evolution of Black Music
Bear-Glasgow Family YMCA | Monday, February 16 | 12 – 3 p.m.

This free community gathering will explore the powerful influence and history of Black music across generations and genres through live performances, cultural conversations, and family-friendly activities. The event will feature a kickoff performance by the Walnut Street YMCA Drumline, a Black-Owned Business Expo hosted by Women With a Vision, face painting for all ages, and complimentary food provided by Café Gelato.

Live presentations will include:

  • Hannah Grantham presenting “Soul in the Mix: Black Music as Living Cultural Heritage”
  • Diamond Jim Greene performing Acoustic Delta-Style Country Blues
  • Trumpeter Jerry Ross, presenting a Jazz Gospel musical performance

Honoring a Legacy of Impact Through Documentary Premiere
Chase Center on the Riverfront | Thursday, February 19 | 5:30 – 8 p.m.

The YMCA of Delaware will host the premiere of “The Walnut Street Y: Passport to Possibilities,” a short documentary by Dr. Jeanne Nutter highlighting 85 years of transformative community impact at the historic Walnut Street YMCA.

The event will take place at the Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington and will include a reception, a documentary screening, and a community conversation celebrating the legacy of one of the nation’s most historically significant YMCA branches. This event is free and open to the public, with limited capacity. Community members who would like to attend can learn more here.

Supporting Black Entrepreneurship and Community Growth
Middletown Family YMCA | Thursday, February 26 | 12 – 3 p.m.

The YMCA of Delaware will conclude its Black History Month programming with the 2nd Annual Black-Owned Business Expo at the Middletown YMCA. This event celebrates Black excellence, entrepreneurship, and innovation by providing a welcoming space for Black-owned businesses to showcase their products and services, connect with new customers, and build relationships with fellow entrepreneurs. Community members are encouraged to attend, support local businesses, and celebrate the creativity and economic impact of Black entrepreneurs in the region. This event is free and open to the community.

Through these events, the YMCA of Delaware continues its commitment to fostering inclusive spaces where diverse cultures and histories are celebrated. By honoring the contributions of Black leaders, artists, and entrepreneurs, the YMCA aims to inspire meaningful dialogue and community connection.
