Prediabetes – Let the YMCA Help You Lower Your Risks

Wilmington, DE- Summer Black is no longer a statistic, and for that, she credits hard work and the YMCA of Delaware. Black was among the 81.1 million Americans who were on the verge of suffering from prediabetes until she joined the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program.

Tuesday, March 26, is the American Diabetes Association Alert Day and the YMCA of Delaware wants residents in the state to know their risk of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, as well as preventive steps they can take to reduce the chance of developing the disease. Prediabetes is a condition in which individuals have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. In Delaware, 80,000 people have diabetes; Summer Black was determined not to be counted among them so she joined the Y’s Diabetes Prevention Program when her weight and eating habits got out of control.

“The support of this group has been life-changing…The best part is I feel better than I have in years, and I’m not done,” said Black.

As the leading community-based network committed to improving the nation’s health, the YMCA of Delaware encourages all adults to take a diabetes risk test at www.ymca.net/diseases.

“Diabetes Alert Day is the perfect time to not only determine our own risk for prediabetes but also encourage our family and friends to determine their chances of developing the disease. The YMCA of Delaware is helping people potentially reduce the risk of developing prediabetes or type 2 diabetes by providing the Y’s Diabetes Prevention Program,” said Kat Luebke, Coordinator Health Integration, the YMCA of Delaware.
