CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF THE YMCA’S YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT PROGRAM

Wilmington, Delaware, April 12, 2018 – The YMCA of Delaware is celebrating 50 years hosting its Youth in Government program. The conference will be held in Dover, Delaware at Legislative Hall and the Kent County Courthouse, April 13-15, 2018. Leading up to the conference, 215 middle and high school students from 14 delegations have met since January to develop proposals that would affect our state.

State Director, Sam Sachs, is prepared to host the largest Youth in Government conference in Delaware’s history. Sam is supported by more than 25 volunteers and a team of youth leaders including the Youth Governor, Youth Speaker of the House and young people filling every leadership role within the three branches of our democratic system. In addition to assuming the roles of lawmakers, young people host a judicial conference, act as lobbyists and serve as members of the press.

“Our Youth in Government program helps develop life-long, responsible citizenship in teens who become both knowledgeable and active in determining the future of our democracy.” said Deborah Bagatta-Bowles, President and CEO of the YMCA of Delaware. “The experience young people receive within our youth development programs makes a lasting impact. Together, as a community of volunteers, staff and students, we are truly developing the next generation of leaders.”

To celebrate the 50th year of Youth in Government, Governor Carney will be making a proclamation on Friday at 1 pm. Attorney General Matt Denn and Youth in Government alum Sarah McBride will be guest speakers during the Governor’s Banquet on Saturday evening.

The youth press will be writing articles and posting on social media throughout the conference. To follow along, visit the various social media links found at www.ymcade.org/youth-in-government/
