Meoli Companies McDonald’s Restaurants & Lefty’s Alley And Eats Send Kids to Y Summer Camp

Lewes, DelawareMeoli Companies McDonald’s Restaurants, and Lefty’s Alley and Eats have pledged to support the Sussex Family YMCA Summer camp by matching up to $5,000 in gifts from the community. Donations will give more than 20 local children the opportunity to have the “Best Summer Ever” at the Sussex Family Y summer camp.

“Camp has never been more critical, as the opportunity gap has grown since the pandemic began, hitting historically disadvantaged students the hardest,” said Tamisha Hopkins, Executive Director of the Sussex Family YMCA. “With the support of donors and caring organizations like Meoli Companies and Lefty’s Alley and Eats, we can provide much needed financial assistance to local families ensuring that everyone has access to vital programs and resources like summer camp. Our impact would not be possible without generous supporters like them, and we are so grateful.”

The Covid pandemic has had a significant impact on K–12 student learning over the last two years. According to a recent article by Mckinsey and Company, on average, students are now four-five months behind in Math and reading by the end of the school year. Additionally, the national crisis has affected students’ broader health and well-being, with many parents deeply concerned about their children’s mental health. The Y is here to address pandemic-related anxiety, renew children’s spirits and bridge the gap between summer learning and fun.

“The Sussex Family YMCA does an exceptional job of offering education-based activities and programs that promote health and well-being for children and families in our community,” Local McDonald’s Owner/Operator Mike Meoli said. “I am proud to support the Y and their efforts in promoting a vibrant, healthy community for years to come. We hope all kids at the Y summer camp truly do have their “Best Summer Ever!”

In 2021, the Sussex Family YMCA provided more than $50,000 in financial assistance to members and program participants and gave more than 200 children the opportunity to attend Summer Camp. YMCA summer camps nurture and enrich development, spark curiosity, and inspire creativity by providing a safe place to learn fundamental skills, build confidence, and establish healthy, trusting relationships. To help prevent summer learning loss and support students academically during the summer months, language arts, reading, science and math are incorporated into camp activities.
