Dover, Delaware – The YMCA of Delaware and Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce (CDCC) are proud to announce the grand opening of the new Discovery Center at the Dover YMCA, a transformative addition designed to expand youth programming and better serve families throughout the community.
Media and community members are invited to attend the official ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, April 9, at 10:00 AM, where local leaders will share remarks to commemorate this exciting milestone. The celebration will continue throughout the morning with program demonstrations, raffles, giveaways, and family-friendly activities.
The new Discovery Center is part of the Dover Y’s Family First Initiative, which aims to expand access to high-quality programs and experiences for youth and families. This innovative space will significantly enhance offerings at the Dover YMCA, including expanded childcare, summer camp opportunities, School’s Out Care, and Kids’ Club programming. The center will also feature new experiences, including a Ninja Zone, Makerspace, teen clubs, family events, birthday parties, and Parents Night Out programs.
“The Discovery Center represents our continued commitment to ensuring every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive,” said John Rice, Dover YMCA Community Executive Director. “By fostering creativity, encouraging exploration, and supporting academic success through literacy and STEM, we are helping put youth on a pathway to success while meeting the evolving needs of families in Kent County.”
“The Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce is immensely proud of the efforts that John Rice and his team are making to enhance community offerings for youth,” said Dr. Dina Carol Vendetti, CDCC President. “The new Discovery Center will serve as a hub for childcare, new programming, and family-friendly events that will help shape the lives of the community’s next generation. This new center is not just a band-aid on a temporary problem; it is instead a long-term solution designed to shape the future.”
This project was made possible through community partnerships that expand access and opportunity for local families. The YMCA of Delaware and CDCC extend their sincere gratitude to the Draper Holdings Charitable Foundation for its generous support in making the Discovery Center a reality. Additional support from Bally’s Dover will provide life-changing camp experiences in the new space through scholarships for school-age children.
With demand for programs continuing to grow, the YMCA of Delaware invites community partners to help meet the need, expanding access and creating more opportunities for youth and families across Kent County.
From early learning and afterschool care to summer camp, sports, and wellness programs, the Y creates opportunities for individuals and families at every stage of life. Through its Open Doors financial assistance program, no one is turned away due to an inability to pay, ensuring all can access safe, supportive environments to learn, grow, and thrive. This work is made possible by dedicated staff, volunteers, and community partners across Delaware.
