Central YMCA Mission Market Provides Food and Clothing to Local Residents

Grand Opening September 1st at 2 p.m.

Wilmington, Delaware – The Central YMCA is set for the grand opening of the Y Mission Market. The free store, open to all, will feature men’s, women’s and children’s clothing in a variety of sizes as well as shoes, toiletries, backpacks, shelf-stable food, frozen meats, fresh vegetables, and more. Thanks to generous clothing and food donations from the community, the YMCA has stocked shelves and filled clothing racks for weeks in preparation for the Grand Opening on September 1st at 2 p.m.

“Many urban neighborhoods and rural towns, such as Wilmington, are without access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food” said Downtown YMCA Executive Director Jesus De Las Salas. “Instead of supermarkets and grocery stores, these communities are served by fast food restaurants and convenience stores that offer few healthy, affordable food options. This lack of access contributes to a poor diet and can lead to higher levels of obesity and other diet-related diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease.”

The Y Mission Market will be open weekly on Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and one Saturday each month. Saturday dates will be announced monthly. The Y will work with those in need to accommodate other times as needed.

Donations were provided by local community members and partners which include: The Food Bank of Delaware, Brandywine Hundred Rotary Club, Planting to Feed Inc., Wawa, Giant and Starbucks. Anyone interested in supporting the Y Mission Market can bring donations to the Central YMCA front desk at any time.
